Hidden Habitats: Exploring Karst Invertebrates and Caves in Hays County

This study explores different ways to divide up areas in Hays County, Texas, for managing and protecting rare cave-dwelling species. Researchers looked at the locations of 45 rare karst species by sampling caves and reviewing past records. They used three methods to analyze where species are most unique or concentrated and found that the area around San Marcos Springs has especially high levels of species found nowhere else.
The study also evaluated how underground water systems and geology affect the connections between cave habitats. Using existing karst data, the team created a series of maps showing potential areas that could be used as management units for these species. They compared different mapping and analysis techniques, outlining the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Overall, the resulting maps and recommendations offer a valuable starting point for land managers who are making decisions about protecting karst habitats and the unique species that live in them.
